Summary/Abstract: The article gives an overview of the various aspects of integration of immigrants that shall be taken into consideration when shaping an immigration policy. It argues that immigration – especially from outside the continent – shall remain one of the main issues of the European Communities in the 21th century. It considers integration as a two-way process, demanding efforts of adaptation from both the immigrant individuals and communities as well as the receiving society. Besides the positive demographic and economic effects of immigration, there are ethnic and race conflicts as well as security concerns arising from the phenomenon. The paper introduces the various factors by which the success or failure of immigrant integration can be measured, such as level and quality of employment, education, housing, access to social welfare, political participation, health and mortality as well as criminal records.
