Summary/Abstract: The article presents the antagonistic relationship between the Romantic imagination and (political) authority, defining the aesthetic schools and orientations in a political perspective. As the Romantic imagination is synonymous to the spiritual revolt and even revolution, it poses a continuous challenge to every authority, be it cultural, ideological or political. The analysis is based on the English poetry and aesthetics from the 18th and 19th centuries (especially William Blake’s, Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s and Percy Bysshe Shelley’s), as well as on German transcendental philosophy, especially Schelling’s.
