Summary/Abstract: The current experience of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering in Sarajevo is presented in this paper, regarding the abilities of former secondary school students in Bosnia and Herzegovina to cope with topics in area of computer science and information technologies. The fact is that graduates from secondary schools, now students, have difficulties with courses in which they need to demonstrate basic knowledge of computer programming and computer science. Therefore, an analysis of curriculum of the IT course for secondary schools is given, as well as analysis of prior knowledge acquired from the IT course in elementary schools in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It was pointed out, that these curricula are obsolete, and that notion of computer literacy should be disjoined from knowledge of computer programming and computer science. An overview of approaches of other states in solving these problems has been also given. It was concluded that the curricula of subjects covering topics related to computer science and programming in elementary and secondary schools ought to be urgently modified, in order to raise the knowledge in these fields to the satisfactory level, which is necessary for successful education of contemporary engineers for the 21st century.
