Summary/Abstract: Clichés and perceptions do not change fast; it was not long ago that Hungary ceased to be seen as a most successful ‘Transition’ country. In fact, Hungary was the first EU member state to turn to the IMF for financial support in 2008. Macroeconomic figures indicate that the Hungarian economy is, at best, a mediocre achiever in the Transition game. As for the domestic perception: the Hungarian public became very critical of the state of affairs in the second half of the last decade, and one of the main themes of the 2010 election was the perceived failure of the regime change process of the last two decades.
