Summary/Abstract: Time off in terms of time free of work is the period of time which a person may freely dispose of and which he or she is free from binding duties. As a good widely available, it appeared only in the 20th century, which thus gained even the name of „the civilization of leisure”. The article pointed out that leisure is a specific sign of the times, kairos, „the time for” that allows a person to understand that the meaning of his life is not confined only to work and constitutes a chance to build a relationship of intimacy with others (especially in the marriage and family). Current threats of free time (flexible working hours, questioning Sunday as a day off) seem to have two sources. The first one is called „flexible capitalism”, defined as a child of globalization. The second one is a universal phenomenon of commercialization. In the face of these threats pastoral activity of the Church should seek to develop strategies in the range of contemporary Christian attitudes towards leisure time. This strategy on the one hand should include showing the Christian dimension of time off (catechesis, preaching, Catholic media), on the other hand it should be expressed in the form of strong support for all efforts aimed at maintaining a particular status of Sunday as well as at promotion on a diocesan level of systematic measures focusing on practical implementation of the demands contained in the teaching.
