The Methodological Ship with the Empirical Holes (Provoked Remarks on Plastic Folklore)

Summary/Abstract: To make poetic and aesthetically beautiful the cultural heritage! – under this banner significant processes in the fine arts are passing from the beginning of the century up till now. In science however making things aesthetically beautiful leads to obscurity and distortion of truth about phenomena from earlier cultures. In folkloristics this means rummaging into minor, namely artistic, features which do not contribute at all to the correct explanation of a given ritual or custom. Folklore (the plastic one especially) deals with many symbols, they being less studied as a specific “product” of a definite type of culture. For the sake of facts! For the sake of harmless abstract methodological reasoning! The author appeals for overcoming empirism and for methodology in folkloristic investigation.
