Summary/Abstract: The analysis of archival documents reflecting the history of one of the oldest monuments of wooden architecture of the Russian North, St. Nicholas Church, is presented in the article. The church is located in the rural area of Kovda. We revealed some previously unknown facts about the history of this church. According to various sources, there are some contradictions pertaining the dates of the church erection and further construction. Some discrepancies are encountered in the entries recorded in the period from 1597 to the 1880s. The documents’ analysis allowed us to reveal some characteristic features of the then existing relationships between religious community of St. Nicholas Church and local authorities. The research covered the period of the most strained relations between the state and the church. Studying the history of St. Nicholas Church during the Soviet and the post-Soviet periods we focused on the peculiarities of both processes: conservation of architectural ensemble and maintenance of the interior decorative artifacts.
