Summary/Abstract: This paper reviews claims for the knowledge economy and the changed significance of knowledge. It proposes a theory of public knowledge cultures to chart a new understanding of the pervasiveness and economies of scale of information and its status as a code for economies and wider social and natural ecologies. The paper concludes by examining the “cultural knowledge economy” and its multiple interpretations.
