Summary/Abstract: In the relations between Europe and the Balkans in the 15th–17th centuries are reflected the sharpest contradictions of the era (those between the East and the West, between Islam and Christianity, between Orthodoxy and Catholicism), which determines the solid amount of literature referring to them. The various aspects of this huge and complex problem form two large centers, around which significant historical literature was accumulated. Modern historiography, seeking to explain the reasons for the success of the Turks and the clash with the Western states focuses on different issues. Recently, more attention is being paid to the problems of culture. However, although there is a bulky historical literature on these problems, a number of serious questions still remain unanswered.
