Between the World of the Living and of the Dead: The Mawlid and Mawlid Live Rituals Among the Bulgarian Muslims in the Region of Teteven

Summary/Abstract: The presence of various ethnic and religious communities in Bulgaria, and the dynamic and multifaceted picture of their coexistence raise the question of otherness in its cultural and social dimensions. The Bulgarian Muslims from the region of Teteven, their traditional and contemporary culture and social transformations have remained somewhat outside the scope of studies of researchers. This paper is devoted to a relatively isolated component of the culture of the community, acknolwedged to be an important and inseparable part of its social life. The Mawlid and Mawlid live rituals are part of the post-funereal cycle of rituals and, by their specific characteristics, enrich conceptions about the Islamic cultural traditions in the Bulgarian lands…
