Summary/Abstract: The aim of this article is to present agent-based systems, and of course multiagent-based systems, as a new tool for sociological research. Agent-based systems have broader potential than just a modelling and simulation method. This article as a whole has an ambition to understand and identify main possibilities of use that agent-based systems can have in sociology. Agent-based systems, agent-based approach or methodology can be understood as a new tool to observe, collect or analyse data sets. In this article are shown some possible pathways and functions of agent-based systems and discussed a few methodological issues connected with the contemporary character of society. In the first two sections are presented the basic characteristics of the agent-based systems and the types of the agents. In the third section are argued theoretical issues about character of contemporary societies and their relations to agent-based methodology. Further it is focused on the ways in which agent-based systems are used in sociology. Last, but not least it introduces new approaches of agent-based methodology: SPA approach and GMABS methodology.
