Summary/Abstract: Just as to Kakfa's Gregor Samsa, something unusual happens to the poet, or rather to the subject of Mihalic's poem Metamorphosis, something he is hardly or not at all surprised by. If surprise arises from a comparison of two states that do not coincide, then in this case the feeling of a new state of affairs is subversive to such an extent as to neutralise the past. More precisely, in metamorphosis as a total process, the consciousness of the metamorphosed creature is also gradually transformed in such a way that it always remains in the same relationship towards its subject.
