Summary/Abstract: Since the early 1990s, issues of equality and diversity, and the management of sameness and difference in the workplace have become hot topics in the management. Similarly, the interest in knowledge management has been growing and attracting the attention of business practitioners and scholars. Both management concepts have been developing in parallel. This paper aims to analyze the differences and similarities between the two concepts. It also postulates that any organizational changes regarding knowledge management should be pre-dated by a diversity management programme which will lay ground for the establishing of a knowledge-friendly organizational culture. The article describes the opportunities and threats related to the implementation of a diversity management programme in the case of a local government office. A comparison of two theoretical models of organizations depending on the degree of the implementation of diversity and knowledge management programmes is presented.
