Summary/Abstract: On 20–21 January 2013, the European Research Council and the Israeli Institute in Budapest, with the support of the Central European University in Budapest, held an international workshop on phenomena relating to early modern society. Over a period of two days, twelve leading experts focused on the question of Jewish identity in the face of phenomena such as conversion, heterodoxy and heresy. The workshop provided a forum for responding to current research in this field and sparked a fruitful discussion that questioned a number of established historical narratives. The idea behind the workshop was to review these limits and to look at the early modern period and Jewish culture from the perspective of identities operating on multiple levels.
