Summary/Abstract: In this paper, the authors analyze the most significant changes and developments in family relations which have been under way in some European countries in the past few decades. These changes pertain to the nature and significance of marriage in the contemporary society, a dramatic increase of divorce rate, a growing number of extramarital communities and illegitimate children, an increased number of recomposed and single parent families, and a substantial decrease of birth rate. In this paper, the authors provide statistical data on all these developments, analyze the major causes of changes in marital and family relations, and elaborate on the consequences thereof. The major factors for such a "revolutionary" transformation of marital and family relations are individualism in the contemporary society, considering that the basic social unit is no longer the family but an individual, as well as the changes in the position and role of woman in the family and society as a whole. Marital and family relations in the Republic of Macedonia have been subject to similar changes, which give rise to numerous dilemmas concerning the regulation of family issues.
