Summary/Abstract: This paper is partially relying on the traditional understanding of the discourse marker studies and the pragmatic marking characteristics of the English borrowings – anglicisms – a very numerous category of words in the modern Russian discourse. Anglicisms carry very strong temporal and emphatic connotations, placing the discourse unmistakably within the narrative plane of modernity. The compactness of their meaning makes them very applicable in mass media discourse. These qualities help anglicisms to transmit a unique ‘special’ type of message often with a specific ideological connotation and mark discourse with certain unmistakable qualities. The speaker’s choice of anglicisms tends to illustrate his/her intention to be a part of current global problems and trends and to express his/her attitude towards a topic of discussion. Therefore, the term ‘pragmatic marking’ is highly appropriate in this respect as it defines the characteristics of anglicisms and their unique and complex plane of meaning.
