Summary/Abstract: As a result of the outbreak of the Second World War, Poland’s territory was divided between the German Reich and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. Lithuania lost its own independence as well by becoming one of the republics of the USSR. During the war the Polish government-in-exile solicited to determine the post-war borders of Poland as they had been established in 1920 by the Treaty of Riga. However, the most significant issue in the problem of the inclusion of Lviv and Vilnius in Polish territory was the consent of Joseph Stalin. The final shape of the borders was determined by Three Great Powers at conferences in Tehran, Yalta and Potsdam.
