Summary/Abstract: This paper aims to argue that in the participatory framework of discourse, 'well' functions as a response marker which anchors its user in an interaction when an upcoming contribution is not entirely consistent with prior coherence options. This is because one of the central tasks of everyday speech is the accomplishment of conversational coherence through creating connections between statements. What is essential about this discourse marker is that it is illustrative of the speaker's attempt to accomplish coherence despite a temporary inability to provide it according to the prior discourse options. We have chosen Hannah and Her Sisters film script by Woody Allen in order to illustrate this.
