Summary/Abstract: Dragana Tomasević in her review of the novel „Kad bi ubili zmiju“ / “If we kill a snake“ by Yasar Kemal, in the form of a sort of introduction, shows a brief overview of creation of this famous Turkish (Kurd) writer. Yasar Kemal devised his work primarily on thematization and subtle modernist articulation of the rich tradition of folk tradition, folklore materials in general, but, in later stages, and on themes of the recent Turkish history. Some novels of this writer, such as “Rebel with the Toros“ and “The Legend of Ararat“ have been translated and published in bosnian language. Their latest series is a short novel “If we kill a snake“ which this critical review is dedicated to. The author outlines the rich content of the novel pervaded with symbolism and exotic motifs, at which center is the boy Hassan and his mother. The story of the novel, at the symbolic level, corresponds to the ancient Greek myth of Orestes and his intention to kill his own mother, because of her responsibility for the death of his father. Dragana Tomašević in her interpertation, following chronologically the thread of action, emphasizes and analytically points out the narrative essential features of the novel, and so illustrates the way this writer, with the true art of storyteller and artist of word, criticizes certain social norms, but also deals with some fundamental dilemmas of human destiny.
