LITHUANIA AND POLAND IN THE LAST MILLENNIUM: BETWEEN THE MARGINS AND THE HEART OF EUROPE

Summary/Abstract: 17th century marked the spread of Christianity and move of the heart of Europe from the Mediterranean Sea region to North-Western Europe. At the same time, Europe moved from the margins to the heart of the world. However, nowadays European global significance is diminishing and the heart of the world is moving to other regions. The center and margins idea is mutable and reflects two dimensions. The first dimension is European place and role in global civilizational space. The second dimension is state’s place and role in European civilization. The goal of this article is to determine the changing role of Lithuania and Poland in constantly changing Europe. Both, Lithuania and Poland, are not in constant margins or the heart of Europe. In the last millennium, both countries together and separately occupied positions in margins; both in the course of history moved from the margins towards the center. Iki kriščionybės įsigalėjimo Europos centras buvo jos paribiuose – Viduržemio jūros regione. Tuo pačiu metu pati Europa tapo pasaulyje dominuojančiu civilizacijos centru. Šiuolaikiniame pasaulyje blėstant Europos ekonominei ir politinei įtakai bei iškylant naujiems galios centrams Azijoje, pasitikėjimas Europiniu identitetu ir vertybėmis lemia Europos judėjimą iš centro į paribį. Centro ir paribių sampratos kaita Europoje turi kelias dimensijas: Europos vaidmuo bei vieta globalioje civilizacijų erdvėje ir valstybių vieta Europos civilizacinėje erdvėje. Straipsnio tikslas yra nustatyti Lietuvos ir Lenkijos vaidmenį nuolat kintančioje Europoje, atsižvelgiant į tai, kad istorijos tėkmėje šių valstybių vieta ir vaidmuo taip pat kito. Lietuva ir Lenkija yra ne tik Europos centras ar Europos civilizacijos paribio valstybės. Per pastarąjį tūkstantmetį šios valstybės siekė tiek Europos centro vaidmens, tiek istorijos tėkmėje užimdavo paribio valstybių vietą.
