Summary/Abstract: On 25 June 2005, the 6th parliamentary elections took place in Bulgaria. There was no clear-cut winner, partly due to the new nationalistic party “Ataka” with 8.14 %, and because only 54.28 % of the voters took part in the voting. Therefore, forming a government was extremely difficult considering the personal and ideological idiosyncrasies between the different actors, Simeon Sakskoburggotski (NDSV/NMSII), Sergej Stanisev (BSP) and Ahmed Dogan (DPS/MRF). The most logical coalition between the BSP and the NDSV/NMSII did not come about for weeks, because Sakskoburggotski and Stanisev could not agree on the leadership of the new government. In addition, President Parvanov insisted on including Dogan’s MRF, although arithmetically its presence was not necessary. But he needed Dogan’s support for the presidential elections next year. Finally, Sakskoburggotski renounced the leadership of the government. On 16 August 2005, Sergej Stanisev became Prime Minister of a coalition government consisting of BSP, MRF and NMSII.
