Summary/Abstract: The author studies the social and aesthetic functions of song cycles, popular among Bulgarian city population at the end of 19th and beginning of 20th century. Spas Zafirov in his booklet of love songs "Balgarska Gusla" has substituted the classic Greek mythology with the native Bulgarian one. The language of Romanticism is mix with the popular sentimental and folk motives. At the beginning love cycles were considered not as low culture but as prestigious one, presenting the new written standards to the auditory accustomed to predominantly oral tradition . Later patriotic and revolutionary themes have been considered most important for the National liberation and love poetry has been marginalized.
