Summary/Abstract: This paper brings into play a new perspective upon the organization of suburban areas, emphasizing the very element which is often overlooked in their systematization, namely the preservation of spaces free of construction. The fractal vision of urbanization helps develop a rational disposition of these spaces within the urban fabric, without fragmenting the latter’s unity. By employing the MUP City computer analysis program, these approaches were concretely applied in generating several scenarios of development for Bucharest’s urban sprawl. The ultimate goal is to offer an alternative to the diffuse city, while at the same time reconciling the objectives of sustainable urbanism with the various intentions of the actors involved in the modeling of suburban areas.
