The blessed Dominican Nuns: Euphemia of the Piast (1299–1359) and Elisabeth of Hungary (1292–1336) – middle European models of sanctity from XIV century

Summary/Abstract: The XIV century did not have so many saint representatives of the middle European court circle like the preceding century. In this time Queen Hedwig of Anjou was the only canonized and one lay person. In addition there is the cult of two blessed daughters of monarchs: Euphemia of the Piast from Racibórz in Silesia (1299–1359) and the daughter of King Andrew III, Elisabeth of Hungary (1292–1336). Both had been representatives of the same generation, had the same forefather, and belonged to the same Dominican order. Even though they had not known each other and had not heard about each other, both had realized the same Dominican order’s idea, became part of the same mystical way of life, and obtained the remembrance of their holy deeds throughout out the ages.The present article is a comparison between the two middle European Dominican blessed women, their holiness fascinated and enriched the Church on both sides of the Carpathian mountains: in Poland (in Silesia), and in Hungary and then in Switzerland. The author discusses the research foundations of both persons and shows their mutual roots, their similar history of monastic vocation, their monastic life and their opinions of holiness, in which they had ended their life. There are a lot of differences between those two blessed women, and also a lot of similarities, which are the main reasons for their comparison.
