Summary/Abstract: Roşia Montană is located in an area with rich mineral resources which justified the early mining exploitation. The township of Roşia Montană is affected by the historical pollution (acidic water from the old mine shafts, the soil pollution due to open-pit quarries) and also were identified secondary effects such as landslides caused by the ancient mining exploitations. A new mining project has received operating license and generated a large nationwide controversy due to its environmental impact. Roşia Montană is among mining sites most affected by historical pollution in Romania.
