Summary/Abstract: This article discusses the phenomenon of intertextuality of rock music. As opposed to literature, rock is multi-code in nature, as it is a conglomeration of music, word, and image. Hence, the question of intertextuality of rock should be considered in reference to all those codes in parallel. The essay does not consider stylisation and intertextuality as separate issues; instead, the former is approached as a variety of the latter, whilst both are seen as a common area of intertextual relations. The Author is primarily interested in the subject of intertextual references (high/popular/folk/exotic/rock culture) and, secondly, in the actual aim of those references, in rock’s attitude toward high-artistic culture, pop culture, folklore, exoticism, and, its own tradition.
