Summary/Abstract: The aim of the article is to analyze epitome as a peculiar kind of written communication. The research is based on the letters by Madame de Sévigné (17th century). The richness of textual means (lexical, stylistic, rhetoric), the mastery of disclosing inner world, the emotional state, the artistic ability to display individual view on current events and personalities make it possible to treat the letters at the same level as belles-lettres.
