Impact of attended track on civic attitudes of secondary school students in the Czech Republic

Summary/Abstract: Many research studies dealt with the impacts of stratification of education systems on student outcomes and their self-concept. Little attention has been given to the impact of stratification on the formation of civic attitudes. This paper examines the attitudes of the Czech students in different tracks of secondary education towards the participation in elections, the civic and school engagement and the minority rights, and how the differences of student attitudes have changed in the different schools and tracks in the past decade. The paper also analyses the school factors that influence student attitudes. Data from CIVED (Civic Education Study) in 1999 and Civic Attitudes of Youth Survey (OPM) in 2010 are used. Data were analysed by hierarchical multilevel modelling. Analyses show that civic attitudes of young voters remained stable between 1998 and 2010, as well as the magnitude of differences between tracks and indiviual schools. Analyses infer that development of civic attitudes is influenced by school educational approaches rather than by student composition.
