Summary/Abstract: The German colonists, usually called Swabians, who settled down in the territory of the present-day Vojvodina brought along many useful skills and cultural influences. However, they also took over many things from the local Serbian population. Thus they adopted the cultivation of several local plants such as mais, tobacco, paprika, melones etc. They also adopted the Serbian way of winnowing. In tha area of house building they adopted Sebian materials and the way of building, as well as the long porch alongside the house. In cuisine the Swabians took over several Oriental dishes from the Serbs who also strongly influenced the everyday working derss of the Germans. Finaly, in the late 19th century and during the inter-war period, the Germans were influenced by the way the Serbs defended and developed thir national consciousness and national culture.
