Summary/Abstract: Of the many striking changes to the global economic landscape as a result of the effects of globalization, one of the most overwhelming and visible is the advent and growth of the globally active, or transnational corporation. The elimination of many of the traditional institutional and legal barriers to cross-border investment, technological convergence, and the extensive need for media and other communications infrastructure in the burgeoning global economy have led to the growth of a global media market, dominated by a few vertically and diagonally structured corporations. An unprecedented level of mergers in the areas of media, information technology and computing and the formation of large, highly concentrated media corporations characterized by cross-ownership of both the global and regional levels, means the number of dominant media corporations continue to decrease. The logic behind the acquisition of a diverse cross section of media industries and/or forming intercorporate alliances and sharing agreements is that this allows the speeding up of market entry, the obtaining of new technological knowledge, the sharing of expenses and risks, and the limiting of competition. The highly concentrated, globalized commercial media industry that has resulted from this phenomena affects the cultural and information resources that nourish democratic practices and institutions. Three distinct areas of influence can he observed: economic, socio-cultural and political.
