Summary/Abstract: The probation service has emerged from the need to decrease the negative effects of deprivation of liberty, like: dropping of the community, loss of contact with family, loss of employment (Poledna, 2002). In Romania, the probation service appeared later, the first attempts in 1996. Presently, the main activities of the probation service refer mainly to two aspects: supervision and counseling. Currently, the role of probation is becoming bigger and bigger, because increasingly more people who commit crimes are left on supervision. Lately, the issue of crime is in the attention of many specialists: criminologists, psychologists, sociologists. The studies generally focuse on crime, the causes of the development of delinquent behavior, the risk factors and resilience at young offenders, their reintegration, but there are very few studies and in our country at all on the probation staff. Probation service work is complex, it involves direct work with offender but also with the victims, it assumes the activity of control but also counseling, it assumes office work, and home visits, or visits to prisons, travels to Bucharest for trainings. This is why I think it is a demanding job. The purpose of this paper was to capture the work stressors at probation officers. The reasons I chose this theme were: to discover the work stressors staff and to make them known, because in our country there is not such research. In order to grasp the factors of stress at probation officers I have used the interview-based survey. I believe that identifying stressors is the first step, but is not enough to be identified. It must interfere on them with programs to prevent and combat the stress. This paper represents a small research, a first step toward further research regarding stress at the probation officers.
