Summary/Abstract: The sea is the measure of extension and space. It displays the fundamental proportions of this world, thus, it represents the most genuine transcendental factor in the immanent space. For the ancient Greeks the sea was the ''invisible measure of learning'' (Solon). The present essay gives an interpretation of Kertesz painting with constant reference to the description of the sea by Melville, Michelet and Ratzel. As Michelet states: ''The dialogue with the sea cannot lack a certain melancholy.'' Indeed, Kertesz' painting appears as a modern counterpart of Durer's Melancholy.
