Summary/Abstract: In La Leçon, Ionesco’s attempt is to rehabilitate the word, in order to surpass through this modality the tragedy of language. The bankrupcy of language is also checked in La Cantatrice chauve: in both plays, the characters do not communicate or they have difficulties in doing it because they have nothing to say to one another, they painfully live a monstruous event which manifests itself despite the discourse, namely in the absence of meaningfullness. This “lesson” is nothing but a pretext; the plays deals with language, tragedy, the tragedy of language which loses its essential function, the one of communication.
