Summary/Abstract: This article discusses alienation and unconventionality in contemporary prose. It identifi es various dimensions of alienation and unconventionality as well as strategies adopted by translators to deal with these two aesthetic aspects. The examples are drawn from two novels in German: Die Gelehrtenrepublik by Arno Schmidt and Die Unvollendeten by Reinhard Jirgl, as well as from their Polish translations.
