Summary/Abstract: International standards must be applied in compilation of any subject system in libraries in 1999; IFLA published the study ''Principles Underlying Subject Heading Languages'' which includes 11 standards: 9 serve for compilation of subject headings and 2 for usage in practice. Their application was verified in 11 libraries from 10 countries. Standards have great value both for libraries that already posses a subject system, and for those that are in the process of compilation.
