Summary/Abstract: The origins and development of the city of lassy have been investigated for hundred years by Romanian and foreign specialists. Written medieval sources led to the conclusion that the old centreof the medieval city completed with a customshouse and the so-called Old Borough was located north-cast of the princely court. According to the latest data provided by recent archaeological research, and on the basis of the reinterpretation of sources, the author of this paper concludes that the original centre of lassy might just as well have been placed on the western bank of the Bahlui river, close to the commercial road of Suceava-lassy, A significant moment in the history of the city is the reign of Prince Alexandru cel Bun (1400-1432) who built the princely court and the customshouse, thus giving the centre of the city a south-east rather than a north-west orientation.
