Summary/Abstract: Sobornost’ is an ambiguous term. Not only has its definition evolved over the years, it also acquired specific meaning in the views of Russian philosophers and Eastern Orthodox theologists (A. Chomiakov, S. Bulgakov, P. Evdokimov). Nikolai Berdyaev, twentieth century Russian religious philosopher, described sobornost’ in anthropological terms as a community of believers. According to him, a man needs other fellow creatures to reach self-fulfillment and jointly aim toward the truth. The community (sobornost’), which allows individuals to gain contentment and realization, is the ultimate happiness. It also enables its members to search for truth which can never be found independently. Moreover, the truth is to be discovered in the Church, which Berdyaev describes as a unity of love and freedom. The dogmas of the divine and human nature of Jesus Christ, as well as the one of Holy Trinity are at the centre of Christianity. Both of them are at the same time the foundation of Berdyaev’s anthropology. The existence of two dimensions (divine and human) proves the calling of men to transfiguration while the mystery of the Holy Trinity points to the communal character of all human beings.
