Summary/Abstract: Slovak journalism commemorates an important event – eighty years since the first issue of the Slovak Speech journal, the oldest linguistic magazine in Slovakia, was published (with the subheading „the monthly for interests of standard language“). It happened in September 1932 in Košice at the initiative of the Regional Department of Matica slovenská (Slovak Mother Bee) and the then chairman – a public notary and a great lover of Slovak language, Dr. Ján Petrikovich. The first editors of the magazine were Anton Prídavok and Dr. Henrich Bartek. Experts agree that the establishment of the Slovak Speech was related „to the overall poor state of the Slovak language in the early 30th of the 20th century“. From the second volume the magazine was published by Matica slovenská in Turčiansky Sv. Martin, in 1950 the Slovak Speech journal moved to Bratislava, where it is based up to now.
