Summary/Abstract: In the attempts to promote pharmaceutical sciences and innovative drug research, professors at the Faculty of Pharmacy are facing various challenges and obstacles. Instead of planning their activities in both, teaching and research, professors and their associates are expected to prepare and deliver lectures to about 140 students per class and organize about nine exam terms per academic year. In addition, universities in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BH) are not having adequate research funds. In order to shift the current trends towards progress of scientific research in BH and enhance criteria for academic advancement, the Bologna process could offer improvement at two levels: by improving teaching to research ratio on one side and by raising the quality of scientific research brought about by seamless communication and exchange of ideas throughout Europe on the other. Since the Faculty of Pharmacy is about to adopt the Bologna principles in their course set-ups, enhanced networking in the form of consortiums and collaborative projects with European colleagues would be one of intended effects of the Bologna process that the Faculty could strongly employ to ensure structuring of high-quality research without having to wait for macro economical conditions in BH to improve. Furthermore, since the key for further expansion of modern pharmacy is team work and collaboration between experts in pharmacy, medicine, genetics, biochemistry, molecular biology, microbiology, biotechnology, and other scientific areas, the current integration process at the University of Sarajevo would complement priorities in BH economy, where pharmaceutical research and biotech development has an important role.
