Summary/Abstract: Varban Kilifarski (1879 – 1923) was one of the most interesting personalities in the Bulgarian Anarchist Movement. He passed a good part of his life outside Bulgaria, living and operating in Switzerland, France and Italy in particular. Anarchist trade unionist and advocate of anarchist’ “social truths” in Bulgaria and abroad, he founded a small libertarian agricultural colony in Bulgaria, where he established a well-stocked library, with the scope of elevating the Bulgarian peasants to auto-organisation. Because of his anti-militarism, he was obliged to leave Bulgaria and seek refuge in Paris, Lausanne and, finally, Italy where he was arrested for his activities as organiser and anti-militarist. When, very ill, he went back to Bulgaria, he started fighting against old and new enemies. For his aptitude for studying nature and agriculture (he was also a vegetarian), his comrades in Italy nicknamed him “The Encyclopedical Farmer”.
