Summary/Abstract: Long-lasting legal vacuum in archival legislation and decentralised preservation of archive material from the Archive Fonds of the Republic of Serbia largely resulted in the diversity of the interpretation of archive principles in performance management and their implementation. It is more than obvious that diverse management of archives within their territorial jurisdiction weakens the reputation of the archival service in Serbia. Therefore, within the Society of Serbian Activists, certain measures were taken to unify different archive practices in the sphere of primary preservation of archive and documentary materials. It is clear that the problem of unequal jobs of the same type in the field of primary preservation should definitely be solved by passing either a special law on archives or amendments to the existing archive regulations. Until then we should, by means of ad hoc solutions incorporated in archive theory, elaborate on the standardisation of specialised technical measures for the preservation of archive material. The standardisation of the archive practice would contribute to more efficient performance of professional archivists in the field, more operative documentary materials, a higher quality of secondary preservation of archive material and definitely better rating of the archival service in Serbia.
