Summary/Abstract: At the end of the 19th century the complex geopolitical region of Eastern Europe witnessed an increase in relevance with Russia’s interest to identify new ways of making its presence permanent at the mouths of the Danube. This intention also contributed to the establishment of the Company of Russian Steamers for Navigation in the Black Sea and on the Danube which competed with similar Austrian or foreign companies. In addition to the economic benefits achieved from its shipping activities, the Russian company had access to detailed information on various fields (political, economic etc.) and on the socio-professional environment of the Romanian ports. The activity of the company was expanded and covered almost all Romanian ports on the Danube, and its agents actively promoted Russian interests beyond the field of trade and shipping.
