Summary/Abstract: The paper examines security in Central Asia in the context of the most strikingevents of the year 2014. The main aim of the paper is to find out whether this problemis of central or peripheral importance from the point of view of global stability.Despite lack of breakthrough events in the region in 2014, the author argues thatthe year may become a new turning point in terms of security in Central Asia due toexternal developments that influence the region. Two events of this kind are of utmostimportance, the first being the war in Ukraine and the entire change in the geopoliticsof international relations triggered by Russian-Ukrainian relations. Thisevent revealed the imperial ambitions of the Russian Federation and disturbed thefragile balance of power in the CIS region. The second event that will influence theperception of the region by the global community is the end of the ISAF mission inAfghanistan and the related closure of the Manas coalition base in Kyrgyzstan. This,in the author’s opinion, will determine new international paths of Central Asia, as itsglobal importance will be diminishing. Central Asia will remain key for two players:Russia in terms of its power projection, and China because of economy, especiallyits wealthy energy resources.
