Summary/Abstract: The main concern of this article is the description of various terminology which is used to name dictionaries with a hierarchical macrostructure in Polish lexicography in comparison with similar problems accrued in European lexicography. The first part of this article describes a variety of terms used to name this kind of dictionaries in European lexicography that are employed interchangeably, often as synonyms. This part of the article focuses especially on English language lexicography and pays particular attention to the term ‘thesaurus’. It also shows different preferences in the usage of some of theterms mentioned above in different countries in Europe (e.g. French lexicography and Eastern European lexicography). The second part of this article focuses on Polish lexicography. This part provides a description of the main terminology such as an ‘onomasiological dictionary’ and a ‘non-alphabetical dictionary’ which are sometimes used by linguists as well as of terms more and more often used by lexicographers such as ‘topical dictionaries’, ‘thematic dictionaries’, ‘thesaurus’. It is also shown how often those terms are used and what are the differences in their understanding.
