Summary/Abstract: The history of the German House in Olomouc has not been presented in a separate study yet. That is why the following study deals with the birth of the idea to build the German House in Olomouc in the second half of the 19th century, its realization in 1933 and its meaning for German speaking people in Olomouc primarily in the twenties of the last century. The first part of this article focuses on the birth of the idea to build the German House and the attempts to realize it before the eruption of the First World War. The second part concentrates on the effort of German culturally involved groups of German society in Olomouc to turn the project of establishment the German House into reality in the first decade after the establishment of the first Czechoslovak Republic. Besides, the meaning and function of the announced German House for the social and cultural life of the German community in Olomouc have been analyzed. The final part of this study examines the building of the German House, which was started in December 1932, the opening ceremony a year later and also answers a question whether the German House has helped to improve the state of the German culture with the respect to the criticized insufficient coordination of the German cultural and society life and its fragmentation.
