Summary/Abstract: This paper analyses the economic and social consequences of decollectivization among the Bulgarian population in Bessarabia. It presents the essence of the rural reform in the 1990s, its impact on the families’ development and their strategies of adaptation to the new situation of the market economy. The main accent of the analysis is the comparison between the nature of different kinds of private farms and agricultural enterprises working in both countries. The research is interested in how the modern enterprises manage to answer the people’s expectations to act as successors to the Soviet kolkhozes and as the biggest employers in the villages. The conclusions are the result of fieldwork conducted in Moldova and Ukraine in 2009.
