Summary/Abstract: This article is a theoretical and critical study of the problem of dyslexia – one of the most common and frequently occurring developmental disorders. The first part of the article presents the history of scientific research into dyslexia as conducted in Poland and more generally in the world. Both the terminology and the classificatory framework associated with dyslexia are systematized. In the next part, the author presents the most well-known definitions of dyslexia, and seeks to subject them to critical analysis, noting what is involved in proper diagnosis, and the errors that tend to occur in therapy. Then some etiological concepts are presented, whose aim is to aid in identifying the causes of dyslexia. The earliest symptoms of the disorder are also noted – ones that will allow for both diagnosis and therapeutic treatment to be undertaken already at preschool level. The primary aim of the article, then, is to argue for the importance of early diagnosis. A secondary concern is to contest the widespread yet mistaken reduction of dyslexia to troubles with reading and writing. A broad spectrum of problems connected with dyslexia are therefore presented, including learning disabilities, failure of one kind or another at school, and the emotional effects of the disorder. The title alludes to the insinuations one may frequently encounter, to the effect that dyslexia is no more than a fad of the moment, or a way to dodge the requirements of schooling. With this in mind, the text attempts to explicate the issues involved, and thus clarify what it means to recognize the real symptoms of dyslexia.
