Summary/Abstract: In contemporary culture tolerance has gained a unique position. It is even glorified as the most desirable personal feature, as well as the organizing principle of social life. It is obvious that while remembering about such a high valuation of this feature, it must be taken into account when reflecting on the process of education. Two problems appear here: firstly, whether and in what sense tolerance may be the intended aim of education and its role in the desired structure of personality? Secondly, refers to the extent to which tolerance should be a personal attribute of teacher and how it should manifest itself in the educational relationship. These issues can be looked at from three perspectives: looking at the behaviours and attitudes that are the result of tolerance (negative and positive tolerance), looking at its object (group and individual tolerance), and looking at the motives leading to the assumption that tolerance is the correct attitude (relativism and universal respect for the other person). The article is an attempt to identify some of new aspects of this classic problem.
