Summary/Abstract: The authors present and analyze the cult of the holy Roma Bibija, still present in the Balkans. This popular Roma cult dates back to the end of the 19th century, and was popularized in the first half of the 20th century in Serbia but its origins run much deeper. It comes from a wide circle of Balkan beliefs and rituals related to illnesses and the ways of avoiding them, and also related to their other annual ceremonies. The Roma community has experienced a contamination of their religious beliefs and ceremonies. As a result there occurred a specific Roma cult, directly associated with the development of the Roma identity in the Balkans.
