Summary/Abstract: Cardiovascular diseases now represent the most frequent cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, with the highest rate in East Europe (58%), as compared to the Western countries in which mortality through cardiovascular disease has gone down to 38%. Global data provided by WHO, in 2015, shows that 31% of the general mortality (17.5 million) was caused in 2012 by cardiovascular diseases. Of these, 42% (7.4 million) were represented by the coronary disease and 35% (6.7 million) by cerebrovascular accidents. As for Romania, according to the data published by the Romanian Society of Cardiology in 2015, 60% die from cardiovascular diseases, thus turning this pathology into the main cause of mortality in this country, as well. Of the cardiovascular diseases, the coronary one is the most frequent cause of death in both men and women; however, it kills men rather than women, whereas the cerebrovascular disease is responsible for the death of women rather than men. Year in year out, 3.3 million women die of acute coronary syndromes and 3.2 million are killed by cerebrovascular accidents.
